Towanda's Trees Grow by the River
Towanda is a Butler County town of about 1,447 people along the Whitewater River, and its name comes from an Osage word meaning big village. Most tree service work we do in Towanda involves the large trees the river supports, along with the routine pruning and removals every small town needs.
The Whitewater
The Whitewater River runs along Towanda and continues south to join the Walnut River at Augusta. Trees along its banks and floodplain, typically cottonwood, sycamore, hackberry, elm, silver maple and walnut, grow large in the deep, moist soil. Those species drop big limbs as they age. Cottonwood and silver maple in particular have brittle wood and tend to fail at old wounds or at forks with bark pinched between the stems.
Limbs down after the 2024 derecho
When a derecho crossed Kansas on May 19, 2024, the National Weather Service received a delayed report of sporadic tree damage in Towanda: limbs down across the city, all under five inches in diameter. That's a fairly typical summer storm for this area. No trees on houses, but a lot of cleanup, and plenty of broken stubs left in the canopy. Those stubs matter. A torn branch left in a tree is an entry point for decay, and a broken limb still hanging in the crown can fall later. After a storm like that, a cleanup pruning visit cuts torn stubs back to clean collars and gets the hangers down.
A long storm record
Towanda's history includes one of the earliest documented killer tornadoes in the area. On March 31, 1892, an F4 tornado struck the town, killing at least nine people and injuring 60. The town was founded in 1870, incorporated in 1905, and has stayed small since, with a population that barely changed between 2010 (1,450) and 2020 (1,447).
What a stable town means for trees
In a town that hasn't grown or changed much, the trees in a yard may be older than the house. Here's what we look for on those older trees:
- Cavities and soft wood at the base or in major limbs
- Dead tops on elms and hackberries
- Large limbs growing over the roof that have lost their taper
- Cracks running down from old pruning cuts
- Fungus or conks on the trunk
Any of those can mean pruning is enough, or that a removal is safer. We'll tell you which, and why.
Close to El Dorado and Augusta
Towanda sits between Wichita and El Dorado in Butler County, so we often combine Towanda visits with work in Augusta, Benton and El Dorado. If you're flexible on timing, let us know and we can schedule your job on a day we're already nearby.
Disposal
Every estimate includes how the wood and brush will be handled: chipped and hauled, chipped and left as mulch, or cut to firewood length and stacked. We'll note it in writing so there's no confusion.

Towanda Questions
After a storm, there are broken branches still up in my tree. Do they need to come down?
Yes. Hanging broken limbs can fall days or weeks later, and torn stubs invite decay. A cleanup pruning visit gets the hangers down and cuts the stubs back properly.
Is a big sycamore or cottonwood worth keeping?
Often, yes, if the trunk and main limbs are sound. These trees give a lot of shade. Regular deadwood removal and reducing the heaviest limbs over the house can keep a healthy one safe for many years.
Do you charge more to drive out to Towanda?
Towanda is within our normal service area, and estimates there are free. Pricing depends on the work itself; we put it in writing before anything starts.
Can you grind a stump close to a fence or house?
Yes, in most cases. Smaller grinders can work close to fences and foundations, and we take care around buried lines. Call 811 before any digging; we'll check that utilities are marked before grinding.
