Colwich Trees and Colwich Weather

Colwich is a small city centered near 53rd Street North and 167th Street West, northwest of Wichita. Its name is a blend of Colorado and Wichita, from the Colorado and Wichita Railroad the town grew up on in 1887. Tree service in Colwich is usually about the weather, because a small town surrounded by open fields doesn't have much between it and the next storm.

Ice on the branches

When the National Weather Service documented the January 13-16, 2017 ice storm, one of its photos showed tree branches near Colwich fully coated in ice. That storm put down tree limbs and some power lines across Kansas. Ice is a slow, heavy load. Branches bend and bend and then snap, usually at a weak point: a dead section, an old wound, or a narrow fork. Trees that were pruned before winter ride out ice better because there's less dead and weakly attached wood to fail.

And wind

Colwich was also in the path of the June 19, 1990 Inland Hurricane, a straight-line wind event with 65 to 120 mph winds across parts of six counties. NWS noted damage to the KFDI tower near Colwich that night. Big straight-line wind events like that are less common than ordinary thunderstorms, but the ordinary ones still bring 50 to 70 mph gusts several times a year.

Getting trees ready for storm season

What a pre-storm visit typically includes:

  • Removing dead limbs, which fail first in ice and wind
  • Shortening long limbs that reach over the roof or driveway
  • Thinning dense crowns so wind passes through more easily
  • Checking forks for cracks and trapped bark
  • Pointing out trees that should come out instead of being pruned

We price each item so you can do the most important ones first.

After a storm

If ice or wind has already done its damage, our first priority is anything on a structure, blocking a driveway or hanging over a place where people walk. Broken limbs left hanging in a tree are called hangers, and they can fall days later without warning. After the urgent work, we prune the torn stubs back to clean cuts so the tree can seal them.

A small, steady town

Colwich incorporated in 1887, the same year it was founded, and had 1,455 residents in the 2020 census, up from 1,327 in 2010. It's about 1.34 square miles of land, with established in-town lots and farmland right up to the edges. Many properties have one or two big shade trees doing most of the work, which makes keeping those trees healthy worth the effort.

Colwich Questions

A branch broke in the ice storm but is still hanging in the tree. What should I do?

Stay out from under it. Hanging broken limbs can fall without warning, especially as ice melts or wind picks up. Call (316) 512-2394 and we'll get it down safely and clean up the break.

When should I prune to prepare for ice season?

Late fall and early winter, after leaf drop, is a good time. We can see the branch structure clearly, and removing deadwood then takes out the weakest wood before the first ice.

Do you work on farms around Colwich?

Yes. We work in town and on the farms and acreages nearby, including windbreak work, dead tree removal and clearing around outbuildings.

How do I know if my tree needs to come down instead of being pruned?

Signs pointing to removal include a large cavity or soft wood in the trunk, a crack through a main fork, more than half the crown dead, or a root plate that has shifted. We'll explain what we see either way, and pruning is the first choice when the tree is sound.

Do you leave firewood?

If you ask, yes. We cut it to length and stack it. Elm and diseased pine wood are better chipped or hauled because they can spread disease.
