Trees on High Ground

Mount Hope sits at about 1,440 feet, well above Wichita's 1,303, on open farm country in northwest Sedgwick County. The town has about 806 residents, and much of the tree service work here is on rural properties and in-town lots exposed to the full force of storms crossing central Kansas.

June 17, 2025

The night Wichita recorded its all-time highest gust, 102 mph at the airport, the same line of storms hit Mount Hope first. NWS logged an 80 mph gust at Mount Hope at 3:54 a.m., about half an hour before the peak in Wichita, and a large tree came down at SW 96th and Burmac Road. Across the region, tree damage was extensive enough that the NWS called it very extensive across Wichita and surrounding areas.

What happens to trees on exposed ground

Trees that grow up in constant wind adapt to it: they develop thicker trunks and stronger roots on the windward side. The problems start when something changes. A neighboring tree comes down and suddenly exposes one that was sheltered. A building goes up and funnels wind. Roots get cut by a trench or a driveway. Or decay sets in at an old wound. On high, open ground like Mount Hope's, those changes are more likely to end in a failure.

Common Mount Hope jobs

  • Removing storm-damaged trees and hangers after wind events
  • Thinning or removing dead trees in farm windbreaks
  • Pruning yard trees back from roofs, sheds and service lines
  • Removing trees that have started leaning after a storm
  • Stump grinding and full cleanup

Windbreaks deserve attention

On farms and acreages around Mount Hope, windbreaks protect homes, livestock and buildings. Old rows often have dead and dying trees mixed in with healthy ones. Pines in windbreaks face pine wilt; K-State says Scots pine is most affected in Kansas, with Austrian pine also susceptible. Infected trees should come down to ground level with the wood destroyed before April 1. Cedars face bagworms, which K-State says are best sprayed in late June when the larvae are still small.

A railroad town

Mount Hope was founded in 1874 and incorporated in 1887. It grew along the Missouri Pacific line that ran from Wichita to Geneseo. Like many small rail towns in Kansas, it has older homes near its center with mature shade trees, and farm ground right up to the edges of town.

Mount Hope Questions

The trees next to the one that fell in the storm look fine. Are they safe?

They may be, but trees that lose a neighbor suddenly take more wind than before. If they were growing as a group, have them checked for weak forks, lean and root problems, especially on the side that's now exposed.

Can you help with an old windbreak on our farm?

Yes. We remove dead and failing trees, thin overcrowded sections and clear fallen trees. If replanting is in your plans, we can grind stumps so new trees can go into the row.

Do you work outside Mount Hope city limits?

Yes. We work on farms and acreages around Mount Hope as well as in town.

How do I find a tree service near me that will drive out to Mount Hope?

Call us at (316) 512-2394. Mount Hope is in our normal service area northwest of Wichita, and on-site estimates are free.

Should I prune my trees before storm season?

Yes. Late fall through early spring is a good window. Removing deadwood, shortening long limbs over buildings and thinning dense crowns lowers the chance of breakage in the strong spring and summer winds that cross this high ground.

Can you take down a dead tree near my grain bin or shop?

Yes. Trees near outbuildings get the same careful approach as trees near houses: we take them down in sections and lower the wood with ropes when there's no clear drop zone. The stump can be ground afterward so equipment can get through.
