Tree Work in Maize
Maize homeowners who hire a tree service usually want to know one thing up front: what happens to the brush? It's a fair question, because the city's brush site has rules that matter. The Maize brush site at the Public Works facility on N. Maize Road is for city residents with a photo ID, open the first Saturday of each month, and the city states plainly that no drop-off or pickup is allowed from commercial services. So when we do tree work in Maize, we haul everything ourselves. You don't have to wait for the first Saturday or cut limbs to the site's 10-foot length limit.
Growth since 2010
The 2020 census counted 5,735 people in Maize, up 67.7% from 3,420 in 2010, and the 2024 estimate was 7,059. That growth means a lot of young trees in new neighborhoods west and north of the original town. Those trees need structural pruning more than removal, and catching a bad fork while the branch is two inches thick is far easier than dealing with it at ten.
The city encourages planting
Maize's Park and Tree Board promotes planting trees suited to Kansas and teaching residents about tree care. The city also runs a Tree Reimbursement Program that refunds 20% of the purchase price of trees planted, up to $100 per household, and points residents to the Preferred Trees for South Central Kansas list. If we remove a tree for you, we'll grind the stump low enough that you can plant a replacement in the same area, and we'll suggest picking from that list.
Terrain and soil
Maize lies in the Wellington-McPherson Lowlands on the west side of Big Slough Creek, about three miles southwest of the Arkansas River. Near the creek, soils run deeper and wetter, which suits cottonwood, willow and silver maple, all fast growers with brittle wood. Away from the creek, many lots sit on open former farmland with little wind shelter. The town's history includes the Dust Bowl years, a 1936 grasshopper plague and a 1944 flood, so it's no stranger to hard weather.
Common jobs we see
- Lifting limbs off roofs and driveways in newer subdivisions
- Removing storm-damaged or dying trees in older yards near the original townsite
- Taking out windbreak trees that have become too large or have died back
- Stump grinding after removals
- Full brush and log haul-off
Windbreaks
Properties on the edge of town sometimes keep an old farm windbreak, and in this part of Kansas those rows are often eastern redcedar, Siberian elm or Osage orange. They're tough trees, but old windbreak rows often have dead stems and leaning trunks. We can thin, prune or remove sections without clearing the whole row.

Maize Questions
Can't I just take the limbs to the Maize brush site?
You can if you're a resident hauling your own material, on the first Saturday of the month. Brush from a hired tree company isn't allowed, so when we do the work, haul-off is included in our estimate.
Does the city help pay for replacement trees?
Maize's Tree Reimbursement Program refunds 20% of the purchase price of new trees, up to $100 per household. Check with City Hall for current details before you buy.
Can you remove part of an old windbreak?
Yes. We can take out dead or leaning trees and leave the healthy ones, or remove a section to open a view or a driveway. We'll mark the trees with you before any cutting starts.
Why do so many trees on newer Maize lots lean to one side?
Open former farm ground gives young trees no shelter, and the prevailing wind pushes them while their roots are still shallow. Correct staking for the first year or two, then removing the stakes, and early structural pruning help them grow upright.
