Sedgwick, the Town

People sometimes confuse the town of Sedgwick with Sedgwick County, but this page is about the town: a small city of about 1,603 people that straddles the Harvey and Sedgwick county line north of Wichita. We offer tree service there for in-town lots and for the farm and river-bottom properties around it.

One of the area's oldest town sites

Sedgwick was laid out on an 80-acre town site in 1870 and incorporated in 1872, making it older than most of the suburbs closer to Wichita. It's named for John Sedgwick, a Union major general in the Civil War. On a lot that's been occupied for 150 years, trees have come and gone, but the survivors are often big, old shade trees: elm, hackberry, silver maple, cottonwood and walnut, sometimes planted by the first or second family on the property.

The river

The Little Arkansas River runs past Sedgwick on its 123-mile course to Wichita. River-bottom ground grows big trees quickly, but trees there also deal with periods of saturated soil, which weakens their grip in a storm. The river's recorded peak flow at Valley Center is 28,600 cubic feet per second compared with an average around 315, which tells you how much its levels swing.

Storm exposure

Sedgwick sits in open farm country between Newton and Wichita, and the region's big wind events have crossed this ground more than once. The June 19, 1990 Inland Hurricane brought 65 to 120 mph straight-line winds to parts of six counties, including damage north of nearby Bentley. The May 19, 2024 derecho caused extensive tree damage in Newton and widespread tree damage near Halstead, both close by. Old trees with deadwood or decay are the ones that fail first in events like those.

Common work around Sedgwick

1. Removing dead or declining old shade trees before they fail 2. Pruning deadwood and heavy limbs over houses and outbuildings 3. Dutch elm disease removals; K-State says the disease is found throughout Kansas and can spread between elms through grafted roots within about 50 feet 4. Clearing volunteer trees from fence lines and drainage ways 5. Stump grinding after removals

Small-town logistics

In small towns, disposal options for large amounts of brush and wood can be limited. Our estimates spell out cleanup: chipped on site, hauled away, or left as firewood. If you're saving wood, remember that K-State advises against keeping elm with bark on, since it harbors the beetles that spread Dutch elm disease.

Sedgwick Questions

Do you work in Sedgwick on both sides of the county line?

Yes. We work throughout the town and on acreages around it, whether the property is in Harvey County or Sedgwick County.

My old elm has a few dead branches. Is it Dutch elm disease?

It might be, or it might be ordinary age and stress. Dutch elm disease typically shows as wilting, yellowing leaves high in the crown in summer, with brown streaks under the bark of affected branches. We can check it and tell you what we see.

Can you take down a tree next to a barn or shed?

Yes. Outbuildings are handled the same way as houses: we take the tree down in sections and lower the wood with ropes if there's no clear space to drop it.

Is a tree that's been in the yard for 100 years worth saving?

Often it is, if the trunk and root flare are sound. Old trees provide shade no young tree can replace for decades. We look for decay, dead tops and major cracks, then recommend pruning, cabling or removal based on what we find.

Do you handle storm cleanup in Sedgwick?

Yes. After wind events we take care of trees on buildings, hangers over walkways and blocked drives first, then broken limbs and full cleanup.
