Tree Service on the Walnut River
El Dorado is about 30 miles east-northeast of Wichita, at the far edge of our regular service area, and we make the drive for tree service there because the town's yards have a lot of mature trees worth caring for. The city sits on the western bank of the Walnut River, southwest of El Dorado Lake, and its older neighborhoods grew up during one of the biggest oil booms in American history.
Boom-era neighborhoods
The El Dorado Oil Field was discovered in 1915, the first field found using geologic mapping, and by 1918 it was the largest single-field producer in the United States, with 12.8% of national output. Houses built in the boom years and the decades after are now 70 to 100 years old, and so are many of the trees around them. In yards that age we expect to find big hackberries, silver maples, elms and oaks, with cottonwoods closer to the river. Trees that age need regular deadwood removal, decay inspections at the base and careful pruning over older roofs.
Storms on record
On June 10, 1958, an F4 tornado struck El Dorado, killing 13 people and injuring at least 80. The city built a memorial at Graham Park in 2008. Straight-line winds are the more regular threat. During the May 8, 2009 derecho, winds of 80 to 100 mph tore across Kansas and the NWS summary shows a large uprooted tree in El Dorado. In the May 19, 2024 derecho, a spotter in town estimated 60 mph gusts and the airport measured 58 mph. And the April 14, 2012 EF3 that tore through southeast Wichita weakened as it entered Butler County, with sporadic damage southwest of El Dorado.
Uprooting versus breaking
The 2009 photo of an uprooted tree is a good reminder that not all storm failures are broken limbs. A tree that tips over at the roots usually had root problems first: rot, roots cut by trenching or construction, a grade change, or saturated soil before the wind. Signs worth calling about:
- A new lean, or one that's getting worse
- Soil cracking or lifting on the side away from the lean
- Mushrooms or conks at the base
- Recent digging within the drip line
Parks and public trees
El Dorado has 12 neighborhood parks, a 6.3-mile bike path and El Dorado State Park just outside the city limits. Trees in parks and along city streets are the city's to manage; on private lots, the care is up to the owner.
How a job here works
Because El Dorado is at the edge of our range, we try to group visits so we can look at several trees, or several neighbors' trees, in one trip. The estimate is free either way, and it's in writing with cleanup spelled out. The 2020 census counted 12,870 people in the city.

El Dorado Questions
Do you really come out to El Dorado?
Yes. It's at the edge of our service area, about 30 miles from Wichita, and we schedule El Dorado visits regularly. Estimates are free there just as in Wichita.
My old elm is still alive. How do I keep it that way?
Prune only in the dormant season, remove dead branches promptly, and watch for wilting leaves at the top of the crown in summer, an early sign of Dutch elm disease. K-State notes early removal of infected branches can sometimes save a tree.
The tree in my yard is leaning more after the last storm. What should I do?
Keep people and vehicles out of where it could fall, and look for cracked or raised soil opposite the lean. Call (316) 512-2394; a shifting root plate is one of the situations we schedule ahead of routine work.
Can you prune trees along the Walnut River behind my house?
Yes. Riverbank trees are often large and leaning toward the water. We use rope rigging to keep limbs out of the river and off the bank where possible.
