Tree Work Along the Ninnescah
Clearwater takes its name from the Ninnescah River, which loops west and south of town. The name comes from Osage, where ninne means water, and the post office spelled it Clear Water until 1894. When we do tree service in Clearwater, a good share of the work is on properties near the river or on acreages outside town, where the trees are bigger and the access is trickier than on a suburban lot.
Chisholm Trail country
The Chisholm Trail ran along Clearwater's eastern side from 1867 to 1871, and settlers arrived in 1870. The town was platted in 1872 and incorporated in 1885. The 2020 census counted 2,653 residents on less than two square miles, so the town itself is compact, while the farms and acreages around it are spread out.
River-bottom trees
The Ninnescah forms in southwestern Sedgwick County where its north and south forks meet and flows about 56 miles southeast to the Arkansas. Along its banks, cottonwoods, hackberries, elms, willows and walnuts grow in deep, moist soil. Those trees grow large but often lean toward light over the water, and riverbank erosion can undercut roots. Before we cut anything near a bank, we look at which way the tree is weighted and where the wood will land.
In-town jobs
Inside Clearwater, the work looks more like any small Kansas town:
- Pruning shade trees off roofs and away from service drops
- Removing dead or storm-broken trees
- Thinning overgrown evergreens and hedges
- Stump grinding after removals
- Hauling brush, since small towns often have limited disposal options
Acreage jobs
Outside town, we often see:
- Old hedge rows (Osage orange) that have grown into fence lines
- Eastern redcedar spreading into pasture
- Dead trees near barns, sheds and outbuildings
- Windbreak rows with gaps and dead stems
We price acreage work by the job after walking the property, and we can work in phases if you want to spread the cost.
Pests worth watching
K-State Research and Extension says Dutch elm disease is found throughout Kansas, and pine wilt is a serious problem for Scots and Austrian pines statewide. Both are common reasons rural and small-town trees need to come out. For cedars and junipers, bagworms are the usual pest; K-State recommends spraying in late June while the larvae are still small.
Wind from the southwest
Clearwater sits southwest of Wichita, so storms crossing Kingman and Sumner counties often reach it before the city. Isolated trees on open acreages take the full force of that wind.

Clearwater Questions
Can you remove a tree leaning over the river bank?
Usually, yes. We often take leaning bank trees down in sections with ropes so the wood lands on the bank rather than in the water. Depending on the bank, we may leave the stump in place to help hold soil.
Do you clear hedge rows and fence lines?
Yes. Osage orange is dense, heavy wood, and old hedge rows take time to clear, but it's routine work. We can clear a full row or open sections for gates and equipment.
Is there a tree service near me in Clearwater that will come out for a single tree?
Yes. A single tree is fine. Estimates are free, and if you have other trees you'd like looked at, we can quote them on the same visit.
My walnut tree is dropping limbs. Can it be saved?
Black walnuts are tough, long-lived trees, and limb drop often comes from deadwood that has built up over years. Pruning out the dead limbs and checking the trunk for decay is the first step; most sound walnuts are worth keeping.
