Tree Service in Mulvane, KS

Working in Mulvane

Mulvane straddles the Sedgwick and Sumner county line, and its center sits about five miles west of the point where Sedgwick, Sumner, Butler and Cowley counties meet. For tree service, that location matters less for permits than for weather: storms that track across Sumner County to the southwest often reach Mulvane next. NWS Wichita has event summaries for Sumner County wind damage in July 2018 and Sumner County tornadoes in March 2026, and the town sits right where those storms head toward the metro.

Low ground and older trees

At about 1,263 feet, Mulvane is one of the lowest-lying towns in the Wichita area. The town was platted in 1879, incorporated in 1883, and named for railroad official Joab R. Mulvane. Its older blocks have the kind of trees that come with 140 years of settlement: tall elms, hackberries, silver maples and the occasional huge cottonwood. Older trees bring different issues than young ones:

  • Trunk and root decay that isn't visible from the street
  • Large dead limbs in the upper crown
  • Limbs that have grown over roofs, garages and service drops
  • Sidewalk and foundation conflicts from surface roots

Dutch elm disease

K-State Research and Extension says Dutch elm disease is found throughout Kansas. The fungus is spread by bark beetles and can move between nearby elms through grafted roots, often within about 50 feet. When more than 25% of an elm's crown has wilted, K-State says it can't be saved. Elm wood with bark on shouldn't be kept for firewood because it breeds the beetles; K-State's guidance is to bury, burn or chip it promptly. If you have elms in a row along a fence line, that root-graft detail matters: losing one can mean losing the next.

The west side of town

Mulvane annexed land west of I-35 (the Kansas Turnpike) in 2008 and 2009, and the Kansas Star Casino opened there in 2011. Development since then has brought new commercial landscaping and newer homes with young trees, a different kind of job from the old elms downtown.

Acreage work

Many Mulvane-area properties are on a few acres outside city limits, with hedgerows, windbreaks and volunteer trees along drainage ways. We do dead tree removal, fence-line clearing and thinning on those properties, priced by the job after we walk it.

Population

The 2020 census counted 6,286 people in Mulvane, up from 6,111 in 2010. It's a steady town rather than a boom town, which means a lot of long-time owners with long-established trees.

Mulvane Questions

One of my elms has wilted leaves at the top. Will the others catch it?

Possibly. Dutch elm disease spreads through bark beetles and through root grafts between elms that are close together. Early pruning of infected branches can sometimes save a tree; past about 25% of the crown, K-State says removal is the answer. We can look at the tree and the ones nearby.

Do you work on the Sumner County side of Mulvane?

Yes. We work throughout Mulvane on both sides of the county line, plus acreages around town.

Can you clear an overgrown fence line on my acreage?

Yes. We remove volunteer trees, dead stems and brush along fence lines and drainage ways, and we can leave healthy trees you want to keep. We'll walk it with you first and mark what stays.

What do you do with elm wood from a removal?

We haul it or chip it. We don't recommend keeping elm with bark on as firewood, because it can harbor the beetles that spread Dutch elm disease.

Do you work around the Kansas Star Casino area on the west side?

We work on residential properties throughout Mulvane, including the newer neighborhoods. Commercial properties are quoted case by case after a site visit.

How long does a typical removal take in Mulvane?

Most single-tree removals on a residential lot take part of a day, including cleanup. Large trees close to buildings take longer because they come down in sections. The estimate gives you a realistic time frame.
