New Streets, Young Trees

A lot of the tree service we do in Bel Aire is preventive, because so many of its yards are new. The city had about 3,695 residents in 1990, 8,262 in the 2020 census and an estimated 9,537 by 2023. New homes mean new trees, and the first 10 to 15 years decide whether a tree grows into a sound, single-trunked shade tree or a split-prone tangle that has to come out at age 30.

Why early pruning matters most here

Nursery trees often arrive with two or three competing leaders. Left alone, those leaders squeeze bark between them as they thicken, and that included bark is one of the most common reasons trees split in a windstorm. Pruning a young tree to one dominant leader takes a few cuts with hand tools. Fixing the same problem 20 years later can mean cabling or removal. If you've moved into a Bel Aire home in the last decade, a single structural pruning visit is one of the best things you can do for your trees.

Open ground, strong gusts

Bel Aire sits in the Wellington-McPherson Lowlands at about 1,394 feet, on the north side of the East Fork of Chisholm Creek and the south side of K-254. Jabara Airport, right at the edge of town, measured an 85 mph gust during the June 17, 2025 storm, the same night Wichita set its all-time wind record. On open lots without older trees around them, young trees take that wind directly, and we often see leaning trunks and torn stakes afterward. Staking should come off after a year or two; wire left on a trunk will girdle it.

The older side of town

Bel Aire began in January 1955 as a water improvement district. The neighborhoods from those first decades have mature elms, ash, silver maples and pines, and those are where removals and heavy pruning come in. Along the creek, cottonwoods and hackberries grow fast in deeper, wetter soil and can drop big limbs. We look at those trees from the ground and, when needed, from the climb.

Pines in older yards

K-State Research and Extension calls Scots pine the most seriously affected species for pine wilt in Kansas, with Austrian pine also affected. Symptoms usually appear from August through December and the tree can brown out in a few weeks. K-State's guidance is to cut affected trees to ground level and destroy the wood by burning, burying or chipping it before April 1, before the beetles that carry the nematode emerge. If you have a pine that went brown all at once, call before spring.

Bel Aire Notes

  • Founding and incorporation. Bel Aire began in January 1955 as a water improvement district and incorporated on November 26, 1980, after a two-year legal dispute with Wichita that the Kansas Supreme Court decided in Bel Aire's favor.
  • Growth. Population went from 3,695 in 1990 to 8,262 in 2020, with a 2023 estimate of 9,537, so many yards have trees planted within the last 20 years.
  • Creek and terrain. The city lies on the north side of the East Fork of Chisholm Creek, in the Wellington-McPherson Lowlands, at about 1,394 feet elevation.
  • June 2025 wind. The automated station at Jabara Airport, listed under Bel Aire in the NWS report, recorded an 85 mph gust during the June 17, 2025 storm.

Bel Aire Questions

My new-construction trees are only a few years old. Is it too early to prune?

No, it's the ideal time. After the first year in the ground, a light structural pruning to pick one leader and remove crossing branches sets the tree up for decades. We also check for stakes and ties that should come off.

My pine turned brown in the fall almost overnight. What happened?

In this part of Kansas, pine wilt is the usual suspect, especially on Scots and Austrian pines. K-State recommends removing the tree to ground level and destroying the wood before April 1. We can take it down and chip it on site.

Do you work along Chisholm Creek where yards back up to the water?

Yes. Creekside trees often need rope work so limbs don't land in the channel or on a neighbor's fence. Let us know about gates and access when you call.

Is there a tree company near me in Bel Aire that does just stump grinding?

We grind stumps on their own or as part of a removal. Tell us the rough diameter and whether there's a fence gate, and we can quote it from photos before a visit.
